Alex grew up in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, and began composing and learning the piano at the age of 5. In 2011 he won the young composer of the year award at the Edinburgh International Harp Festival while studying music at the University of Cambridge. He is now based in London and continues to study composition with Raymond Yiu.
Recent pieces include the string duo Three Bocets for the Living, inspired by traditional Romanian mourning songs, and Four Rain Begging Songs, for flute and clarinet, both written for American ensemble Eighth Blackbird. Another recent piece, Suspensions & Solutions for Viola da Gamba and electronics, was premiered by Liam Byrne at The Barbican in April 2017.
Alex’s music has also been performed at a variety of venues and festivals, including Sónar Barcelona, Mona Bismarck American Center Paris and The Kilkenny Music Festival. As well as his own projects, he is also assisting composer Nico Muhly on his new opera, Marnie, for the ENO and the Metropolitan Opera, New York.
